Women In Defense (WID) Michigan Chapter is pleased to announce its 2012 Excellence in Leadership honoree, Major Carrie M. Atkinson USMC, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, Joint Force Provider Officer. Major Atkinson will be recognized at the 4th annual WID Black Tie Gala on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012.
Early in her career, Excellence in Leadership honoree Major Atkinson served as a Platoon Commander, Company Commander in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and also as a Battalion Executive Officer. She also served as the Operations Officer for Recruiting Station Detroit, when the Services increased forces to support the Global War on Terrorism. Upon her selection to the rank of Major, Major Atkinson served as the Adjutant, Public Affairs Officer, and Legal Officer for Marine Wing Support Group 47 aboard Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Currently, she serves as the Joint Force Provider Officer for Marine Forces Command in Norfolk, VA.
Established in 2009 by WID-Michigan, the Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes women who have made significant contributions to U.S. defense and national security. Recipients are honored at the organization’s Annual Black Tie Gala, and have previously included the U.S. Navy’s Diversity Officer, an Executive Director and Chief of Staff at TACOM Life Cycle Management Command. The organization will also present its Horizon Industry Awards to defense industry professionals for exceptional work, as well as WID-Michigan’s HORIZONS-Michigan scholarships.
