November - General Dynamics Land Systems mc2 field trip

A fantastic team at GDLS mc2 put together a very excellent event for the high school female students that attended. We were greeted by Sonya Sepahban the Senior VP for Engineering, Design & Technology. She reviewed with the students her background, education and career experience. Then MG Amy Courter, President of WID-MI, welcomed the ladies and spoke about her career. We went through a fascinating tour of vehicles and technology. Then they walked them through collaboration exercises. Then several key women from GDLS spoke to the students about their career choices, which offered great insight for the students to use in their future career decisions. A special thanks goes to Joanne Cavanaugh as our host and her team for everything they did for WID-MI STEM Field Trip.

June – Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC)

This was a field trip to Oakland University’s campus where the competition is staged. There are more than 20 international university teams that compete to the specifications each year. We took our high school girls and their parents on a tour of the facilities, then toured the course and then back to a presentation area. We had key women speak to the students, Patty Pomerville of Elmhirst Industries, Miriah Anderson from the University of Missouri team, and Cassandra Smith the Chief of the Technical Management Division Robotic Systems Joint Project Office. The students were then able to try out a robot that Cassandra had brought for them. A special thanks to our host for this event, Jerry Lane from SAIC.

May – Macomb Middle School Science Mathematics Symposium

This event was attended by 8th grade girls from the Chippewa Valley school district. Janet Bean, an advisor to the WID-MI board, was the key note speaker. Marilyn Vala, a STEM committee member, put on a workshop for the day. Stacey Eeman spoke about WID and what attendees could get from the organization.

April – Explorathon

This is a program created by the American Association of University Women, where approximately 550 Michigan female high school students converged on Detroit Country Day to participate in many interactive workshops with female scientists. Women In Defense, through a donation provide by General Dynamics Land Systems, covered the cost to provide each female high school attendee with a book, "Cool Careers for Girls – In Cybersecurity and National Security."
