How the WID MI Scholarship is Building the Future of Defense

Over the past six years, Women in Defense (WID) Michigan has dedicated over $150,000 to transforming women’s lives through education. The deadline for our College Scholarship program has been extended to August 15, providing more women the chance to enter an industry that values their talents. This is more than just financial support; it serves as a pathway to careers in protecting America’s national security and defense interests.

Each scholarship represents WID’s unwavering commitment to uplifting women in national security and increasing diversity in government, academia, and the defense sector. The scholarship program not only encourages women to pursue careers related to national security, but it also gives them the tools they need to succeed.

“This scholarship gave me the means and confidence to excel in my degree program and furthered my interest in a career in the defense industry,” said Nic Buccilli, who transitioned from a high school scholarship recipient to a two-time college scholar at Western Michigan University.

Maintaining a 4.0 GPA in aerospace engineering, Nic worked towards their defense career goals, becoming Boeing’s first intern on its rotorcraft flight test operations team.

More Than Financial Support

The WID MI Scholarship program stands out for the extensive support offered to each scholar. Every woman receives a year of WID membership, along with opportunities to engage with and connect with others in the defense industry.

Kate Jacobs, a 2024 WID-MI scholar and software engineering student at Lawrence Technological University, recently completed a summer internship at General Dynamics Land Systems, where she attended the leadership summit.

“I am honored to have been surrounded by such successful and supportive women,” Kate Jacobs said after attending the WID Michigan Leadership Summit. “It’s been special to experience the Defense industry, and I am grateful for the amazing insight.”

Our scholarship recipients represent communities across Michigan. As they advance in their defense-focused education, high school scholarship recipients often apply for our college scholarship. Women are eligible to receive the college scholarship up to two times.

The WID Michigan Scholarship program aims to lessen financial stress and support and encourage women pursuing education in the national security and defense fields.

“I have been introduced to an incredible group of women and world-class professionals associated with WID that I cannot wait to work with during my career,” Alexandra Stavros, a 2022 scholar recipient, said.

The impact continues to grow through word-of-mouth. Over the past six years, many new scholars have come to us through referrals from previous recipients and educators who witnessed the program’s success firsthand.

As we prepare for next year’s cycle, we’re energized by our scholars’ success stories and the potential of future recipients.
